Commissure Completes RadPort Installation at Park Nicollet Health Services

New York City, NY (PRWEB) September 27, 2007 -- Commissure, Inc. recently completed the installation of its imaging order decision support application RadPort? at Park Nicollet Health Services in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Park Nicollet Health Services is an integrated care system that includes Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital, Park Nicollet Clinic, Park Nicollet Foundation and Park Nicollet Institute. It has more than 8,200 employees in clinical and administrative positions.

RadPort? satisfies insurer pre-certification requirements which not only saves time during the ordering process, but also contributes to improvements in the management of diagnostic image ordering. Furthermore, the application provides a systematic approach to educating clinicians about appropriate diagnostic imaging procedures while preserving the integrity of patient care among clinicians. Circumventing the call-center approach to pre-certification minimizes billing discrepancies and improves reimbursement management.

RadPort? focuses on assisting referring clinicians with the sometimes-daunting task of ordering radiological exams. RadPort? allows them to enter a patient's symptoms, rating the effectiveness of the physician's exam choice by matching against a rule set based on 10 years of clinical input from over 1,500 clinicians.

The application also features updated decision support rules, improved user interface and operability, greater quality control measures, and the addition of context-aware educational reference material.

"We chose Commissure and RadPort? because we liked the user interface and clinical development of the rules," says Park Nicollet Senior IT Manager Jim Sundberg. "And Commissure's staff was very easy to work with."

Park Nicollet went live with RadPort? in early July. Currently, the system is configured using a scheduling center. Referring physicians (or their staff) call into the center, which enters the information into RadPort?. If the application produces an acceptable score based on the submitted information, the procedure is scheduled. If the score is deemed of low utility, the referring physician is asked to verify the order and consider alternatives. Park Nicollet estimates that approximately 800 referring clinicians on staff utilize the system, with an additional 1,700 peripheral physicians making use of it.

"We approached the installation of RadPort? from a quality management and pre-authorization standpoint," says Sundberg. "Clinical quality is all about performing the right study on the right patient. And of course, our decision to implement RadPort? also came in response to a mandate from the insurance payers."

In 2006, the Minnesota state legislature passed a law mandating the use of pre-authorization or a clinically developed decision support system for any insurance carrier with a Medicaid component to its client base. The major payers stated that in 2007 they would implement pre-notification programs via radiology benefits managers (RBM) prior to paying for the services of any Minnesota healthcare provider.

Park Nicollet opted for the quality management approach, implementing a decision support tool, measuring the progress, and working with clinicians to improve the clinical quality of their ordering.

After two months of its installation, RadPort? is already producing results. Park Nicollet estimates that order entry via an RBM takes approximately 12 minutes. With RadPort? the time is reduced to two minutes.
