The setting of the novel is a fictionalized version of the real-life East Texas area in which Edward grew up. Readers find themselves traveling through the expanse of the East Texas landscape - including cities such as Gilmer, Gladewater and Longview -- and coming face to face with a variety of inhabitants therein. Small-town feeling abounds as readers come to understand the diversity of East Texas culture and way of life.
